When choosing an ice melt you should pay attention to the chemicals at work in your chosen product. Most inexpensive ice melt products contain a high percentage of sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt. Sodium chloride is very corrosive and only performs well in temperatures down to 20°F before it begins to refreeze. Other chemical compounds like calcium chloride and magnesium chloride work well at colder temperatures, even below 0°F, and are less likely to harm plants.
